Hi fellas!
How are you guys doing lately? good? Great! All right, since this blog has been created for critical literacy, so all the entry for this blog will be commenting about a few topics that has been given by my beloved lecturer Mr. Aliff. And for the first topic, he asked us (DECOM 4C’s students) to write about music. Music is my passion even though I don’t know how to play any music instrument so I’m going to write about this passionately.
According to Wikipedia, music is an art form whose medium is sound. So it’s all basically about sound so make sure your ears work well! The legendary musician Bob Marley once said that the good thing about music is when it hits you, you feel no pain. And one more thing about music, it is universal. There a lot of genres in music. Rock, metal, jazz, souls, ballad, just to name a few, are some of the genres we have in music. I listened to all kind of song as I don’t put any boundary when it comes to music. From the loud, noisy sound from Lamb of God to the Nashville-country sound of Taylor Swift. In my laptop, I have a vast music collection of different genres since I love music very much. I also enjoyed watching live music so there are quite a number of video concerts in my collection. Speaking about live music, I personally think that Muse is the best live band in the world. Their infamous concert in Wembley Stadium back in 2007 was totally mind-blowing. I wish I were there! But if i were to choose a band to be my favourite one, that would be The Strokes, an American alternative rock band formed in 1998 in New York City. Why The Strokes? I love them simply because their music is very catchy. Plus every members of the band has their own charisma to become a great band. They have what it takes to be a legend of their own class. Watch the video below if you don’t believe me.
Great stuff from The strokes! Back to the main topic, maybe a lot of people might think that music is all about commercial success. They only listened to sell-out music, or in the other words, the mainstream. They refused to listen to folk, traditional song just because they have been feed by the media to loads of music from west. But they actually didn’t realize that we, in Malaysia have a lot of cool stuff found in our traditional song. For example, there’s a traditional song from Perak, my state of birth, named ‘Dikir Siti Fatimah’. After listened to this song, I was like, “this is totally cool!”
But there is an exception for one genre that I hate the most. It’s from Indonesia and people called it “Dangdut”. The lyrics are all about sex fantasies comes with music video showing sexy dancers shaking their hips.
Music is an art. it's up to the person to judge it and choose whether to like it or hate it.
